The machine is an Océ Arizona 460 GT. The bed takes rigid stock up to 4×8 feet and up to 2 inches thick. Most wood plaques, metal panels, and glass pieces you actually hang or set on a counter are well inside that envelope. The failures we see are not bed-size failures. They are adhesion failures, opacity failures, weather failures, and food-contact assumptions nobody wrote down. Get those four right and flatbed UV printing on wood, metal, and glass looks like the graphic grew on the object. Get them wrong and you own a pretty sample that peels, chalks, or should not sit under cheese.

Wood, coated metal, or glass: pick the object first
Start with the object and the room, not with a file named final-v3.pdf. The same artwork is three different products on sealed maple, on black powder-coated aluminum, and on 6 mm reverse-printed glass. If your email says “UV print this” and attaches a PNG, you have not specified a job. The table below is shop practice for Irvine work, not a warranty table and not a lab report.

Read the outdoor column twice. Indoor wood and indoor glass are home turf. Outdoor coated metal is home turf. Outdoor wood and outdoor first-surface glass are the rows where people argue with weather and then call it a print defect. Orange County sun on a west stucco wall on Barranca or Jamboree is not a museum lamp. If the piece lives there, say outdoor and say the facing. We will steer the substrate. We will not pretend a walnut plaque is a parking-lot sign.
Thickness is a handling spec, not a personality. Wood plaques for a host stand are often in the 1/4-inch to 3/4-inch class. Metal sign blanks are often 0.040 to 0.080 inch aluminum with a coating, or thicker plate if you want the object to feel like plate. Glass for plaques and small splash pieces commonly lands at 3 mm, 4 mm, or 6 mm. The bed will print thicker. Your wall, your standoffs, and your two hands at pickup are the real limits. Put thickness on the quote with size.
If you are torn between two materials, decide what has to win: grain, durability, or a glass face. Grain means wood. Durability in sun and hose-down means coated metal. A glass face that people look through means glass, reverse-printed when we can. Trying to make one substrate do all three is how you get a compromise that satisfies nobody, including the landlord.

Priming is not one product
Buyers say “primer” and mean three different liquids. On this work we care about adhesion promoter, pore sealer, and paint primer, and they are not interchangeable. If you skip the distinction, you skip the job. Most reprints on glass and stainless start here. Most muddy color on oak starts here too, just for a different reason.
Adhesion promoter (glass, stainless, some bare metal)
UV inkjet ink is a polymer droplet that wants a surface energy it can wet. Clean float glass, freshly washed stainless, and some bare aluminums are too tight, too slick, or too contaminated for that droplet to stay. An adhesion promoter — a shop primer made for UV inkjet, not a gray automotive rattle can — raises the odds that the cured film stays put when a fingernail, a cleaning rag, or a thermal cycle tries to lift an edge.
On glass, first-surface work almost always gets this conversation. Reverse work (ink on the back, viewed through the sheet) still needs a clean back and often still wants promoter if the ink stack will be handled, framed against a gasket, or left with ink as the exposed back. On stainless and brushed aluminum, promoter is the default unless a test patch says otherwise. On a fully cured, clean powder coat, we often skip it. “Often” is not “always.” Dark bronze coats, silicone-contaminated shop parts, and anything that sat in a garage with car wax nearby get a test, not a speech.
Application is thin. A flooded, drippy primer coat is a visual defect waiting to print through. We wipe, flash, and print on a schedule, not “whenever the bed is free tomorrow.” If you prime at your shop with an unknown liquid and deliver the sheet sticky, we will stop. Unknown primers are how ink crawls, how white looks gray, and how we inherit a chemistry we cannot reverse on press.
Pore sealer (wood)
Wood is a sponge with a brand. Open-grain oak, ash, and some walnuts will drink ink. Color goes dull. Edges of type feather. A photograph turns into a watercolor whether you wanted that or not. A clear sanding sealer or a dedicated UV-print sealer fills the pores so the droplet sits on a plane. That is not the same liquid as glass promoter. Do not put glass primer on walnut and call it sealed. Do not put wood sealer on glass and call it primed.
Tight-grain maple, birch, and many bamboo panels can print without a heavy sealer if they are sanded, dusted, and dry. You will still see grain. That is the point of wood. If you wanted a perfectly even white field with no grain telegraphing, you wanted coated metal or an opaque sheet, not a “wood look.” Sealer reduces soak. It does not turn oak into aluminum.
Edges and backs matter on wood more than buyers think. A face-sealed plaque with raw edges will take on indoor humidity through the sides and move. A patio plaque with a pretty face and a raw back will cup. If we seal, we talk about which faces. If you already finished the board at a millwork shop, tell us what you used. Oil finishes, wax, and some food-board treatments are ink repellents. A beautiful butcher-block oil is a printing problem. We need a face we can wet.
Hardware-store paint primer (usually the wrong can)
Gray or white paint primer from a big-box aisle is for paint. It can help a carpenter hide tannin bleed. It is not specified for our UV ink, our white channel, or our cure lamps. Sometimes a factory-primed MDF or a pre-primed millwork panel prints well because the factory coat is smooth, fully dry, and compatible. Sometimes a DIY primer is still tacky, too absorbent, or too silicone-slick. We will test a corner. We will not promise that the can in your trunk is the process.
If your millwork vendor already primed the wood, send a spare offcut. If you have no offcut, we print a small patch in a trim area or on a matching sample. A 4×8-ft face is a bad place to discover incompatibility. Put “primer: shop / vendor / none / test” on the quote the same way you put size.
Primer on this ticket means a UV-inkjet adhesion promoter or a wood sealer we agreed to, applied to a clean face. It does not mean leftover wall primer, automotive filler, or a wipe of olive oil on a cutting board.
Cleaning is part of priming even when we skip the bottle. Fingerprints on stainless, silicone overspray from a construction site, furniture wax on a reclaimed plank, and glass cleaner haze will all sit under ink like a release agent. We clean. You should not deliver a sheet you used as a workbench. Isopropyl and a lint-free wipe are typical. Household glass cleaner on the print face of glass is a maybe; ammonia-heavy products and anything that leaves a surfactant film are how first-surface jobs fail later, not during the first hour when everyone is still admiring them.
White ink on surfaces that are not paper
Desktop files think white is the paper. Wood, coated metal, and glass are not paper. White is a channel, the same as cyan. If you do not build it, we guess, and guessing is how a black powder-coated panel gets a translucent logo you cannot read from the Spectrum sidewalk.
Three honest options, and you pick one in writing:
- Flood white. White sits under the whole graphic area, then color. You get opacity. On metal and glass this is how a photograph or a brand-color field looks like itself. On wood, flood white also hides grain. Say if that is what you want. A lot of people order wood because of grain and then flood white as if the board were aluminum. That is a valid look. It is not “wood,” it is a print on a wood core.
- Selective white. White only under logos, type, and the parts that must be solid. Grain, metal flake, or a clear glass field stays visible around them. You need a spot plate or a layer named something unambiguous — WhiteInk, not Layer 12 copy — at 100% where white should print.
- No white. Color sits as a stain or a translucent film. Fine on maple for a branded wash. Useless if you expected a solid red mark on walnut or on bronze powder coat. On glass with no white, you get a tint. Daylight through an Irvine storefront will blow through that tint and leave you with a ghost.
On dark powder coat, white is not optional if the art has color. CMYK ink is transparent. Cyan on black metal is a rumor. White, then color, is the stack. We can double-hit white when the panel is a window-adjacent hours board with daylight washing the face. One pass is typical for indoor lobby light. Storefront glass behind the viewer at 4 p.m. on a west elevation is not indoor lobby light. Say the viewing condition.
On brushed metal, white also hides the brush. Sometimes you want that (solid brand block). Sometimes you want the brush to glitter through a thin black (industrial nameplate). Those are different white holds. A flattened RGB export cannot describe them. A vector logo with a white plate can.
On glass, white is opacity and it is also architecture. Reverse print: you look through glass, through color, onto white. White is the backer. First-surface: white goes down first, then color, so color sits on a white ground facing the room. If you reverse that stack you get muddy color or a white fog on top of the art. We set the stack. You still tell us which side is the view side, because a glass hours panel in a storefront has two audiences and only one of them is standing in the suite.
On wood, white is a design decision dressed up as a press setting. Light maple can carry dark type with no white and look expensive. Dark walnut with gold-looking color and no white will look like someone smeared stain. If you want a painted sign that happens to be wood-shaped, flood white or paint the face first and tell us it is a painted face. If you want a craft-object with type in the grain, skip white and accept that brand red will not match a coated PMS chip on paper. Approvals for wood should be on wood, not on a laser print.
Opacity is not binary, and we will not invent a laboratory number for you. One white pass is usually enough on indoor metal and reverse glass against a wall. Window jobs, backlit shelves, and south-facing glass in Irvine often need more white or an opaque interlayer. Photographs on clear glass without white look like a slide. Photographs on walnut without white look like the walnut won. Build the channel. Do not bury the instruction in an email that says “make it pop.”
Wood: species, sanding, and what the grain will do
Wood is the substrate people romanticize and then under-spec. “Wood sign” is not a SKU. Species, cut, moisture, finish history, and whether the board will live over a host stand or over a patio heater are the job. We print on maple, birch, bamboo, walnut, oak, quality plywood, and the occasional MDF with a wood face. We decline greasy pallet boards, wet construction lumber, and anything that still smells like a food-board oil.
Species and cut
Maple and birch are the easy hardwoods: tight grain, even color, type stays crisp after a light sand. Bamboo is popular for menus and small brand panels because it is stable, hard, and photographable. Walnut is the “we have taste” request; it is darker, so white or a light ink set has to be a decision, and open pores still want sealer. Oak looks like oak. That is either the brief or a problem. If your brand type is 8-pt legal copy, oak is a poor stage. If your brand is a large mark and the grain is the texture, oak is honest.
Plywood is a sign material when the face veneer is clean and the core is flat. Baltic birch is the usual good version. Construction plywood with voids, stamps, and a moisture content that still belongs on a jobsite is not. The edge of plywood is a design element or a defect — say whether we leave it, paint it, or band it. MDF prints smoothly and is not wood at the edge. It also swells if you treat it like outdoor lumber. Indoor utility panels, painted faces, and short-run displays can be MDF. A patio menu is not.
Live-edge slabs photograph well and sit badly on a vacuum table. If the face is not a plane, ink in the low spots looks different from ink on the high spots, and the heads want a clearance you may not have. We can print many slabs. We will not pretend a 2-inch walnut cookie with bark is the same setup as a 1/2-inch maple menu. Bring the piece or a true thickness and a photo with a straightedge.
Sanding, dust, and moisture
Sanding is not optional on mill-sawn faces. A 150–220 grit range is typical shop talk for a print face; the exact grit depends on the species and whether you want to keep a sawn texture. Dust is an adhesion killer. Compressed air and a tack cloth are not overkill. If you sand in a room where someone is spraying silicone lube, you have a new problem.
Moisture is the quiet reprint. A board that sat in a garage in August, then came into an air-conditioned suite, will move. Ink does not like moving wood. Indoor Orange County buildings are dry relative to a coastal fog morning in Newport, but a plaque that hangs over a dish pit or a glasswasher is living in a sauna at 8 p.m. Seal all faces if the room is wet. Do not hang untreated plywood over a prep line and then ask why the corners lifted.
Tannins and resins bleed. Oak and some walnuts can discolor a light sealer. Pine can pitch. We are a print shop, not a furniture factory, but we will tell you when a species is a bad idea for a white graphic. If the board is a reclaimed gym floor or a barn door, assume contamination until a test says otherwise. Old finishes, floor wax, and mystery oils are more common than clean, raw hardwood in those romantic photos.
Indoor wood versus outdoor wood
Indoor wood is a brand object: menus, reception marks, donor rails, retail fixtures, ceremony plaques. Direct UV ink on a sealed interior face, maybe a clear coat if hands will abuse it, is a normal Irvine job. Outdoor wood is a building material that happens to have a picture on it. The wood will gray, check, and move in Orange County sun whether the ink is perfect or not. A marine-style finish on all faces, no ground contact, a species that can live outside, and an expectation that you will refinish, are the honest stack. UV ink does not waterproof walnut.
West-facing patio walls at Spectrum-area restaurants cook dark wood. Irrigation overspray on an Irvine office-park planter cooks the bottom edge. A plaque on a fence in a Turtle Rock or Woodbridge HOA has a second problem: the architectural committee may not want a commercial wood sign at all. We can print the board. We cannot talk the HOA into loving it. If the install is exterior, coated metal is usually the better outdoor product and wood is the better indoor product. That is not a slight on wood. That is weather.
Clear coats after print are abrasion and splash insurance, not a food-contact certificate. A host-stand menu that gets wiped with a sanitizer at close should be discussed as a chemical problem. Some sanitizers are hard on coatings and on wood. Bring the cleaner name if this is a nightly ritual. We would rather pick a finish that survives the rag than reprint a menu every quarter and call it “the wood.”
Coated metal: why the coating is the spec
Metal in this article means coated metal first: powder-coated aluminum, pre-painted aluminum sign blanks, factory-painted sheets. Bare, brushed, and stainless are the sequel, and they come with primer. If you say “metal sign” and mean a magnet or a wrap, stop. Those are different products. If you say “metal” and mean a foam-centered aluminum composite sheet, say ACM or the brand you actually bought, because the edge, the stiffness, and the outdoor behavior are not the same as plate.
Coated aluminum is the outdoor workhorse of the three substrates in this piece. Property managers already know it. Sun, irrigation, and a hose do not panic it the way they panic wood and first-surface glass. Interior coated metal is also a clean, opaque, color-true face for directories, equipment labels, and suite IDs when the sign program wants metal instead of plastic. For permitted exterior wall signs and suite panels, start with sign printing on coated metal and other rigid stock as the product family, then we decide whether this panel is UV-direct or another construction.
Powder coat and pre-paint
A fully cured powder coat is a paint film with a texture. Fine textures print. Heavy orange peel prints and then shows in the highlight. Gloss black powder is a fingerprint magnet before we print and a glare source after. Satin and a mid-gloss are easier indoor reads under downlights. If your fabricator already chose gloss bronze because it matched a storefront, we can print it; we will talk about white ink and about viewing angle, not about changing their coat color after the fact.
The coat has to be clean and cured. Fresh powder that still outgasses will bubble under UV lamps. Silicone mold release from a fabrication shop will fish-eye. Mill oil from bare metal that was supposed to be coated, but missed a corner, will reject ink in a neat little map of the miss. We wipe. We do not sand a customer’s finished powder unless you asked for that, because sanding a coat you paid a metal shop for is a fight we would rather have on the phone than on the bed.
Pre-painted aluminum sign blanks are the everyday interior and light-outdoor panel: white face, color face, sometimes brushed-look film. They sit flat. They take white and CMYK predictably. They are the right answer when you wanted “a metal sign” and not an art object. If you also need a matching larger graphic on a wall, keep this panel on the UV ticket and the mural on the large-format ticket.
Bare, brushed, anodized, stainless
Bare aluminum oxidizes and often arrives oily. Degrease, promoter, test. Brushed aluminum is a finish people want to see. White flood will hide the brush; selective white lets it flash around a mark. Fingerprints under the ink become fossils. Handle with gloves after cleaning.
Anodized aluminum is a dyed oxide, not a powder. Some anodize accepts UV ink cleanly. Some does not. Color-matched anodize plus CMYK is not a promise you should make to a brand manager without a patch. Stainless — the 304 plaques and machine guards people bring from labs around UCI and the medical corridor — is slick. Promoter is the default. Hairline stainless will show every dust speck in a flood white. It also shows every scratch in first-surface ink. If the plaque lives on a cart that bangs doors, metal is still better than glass, but the ink is not armor plate.
Do not bring us a greasy machine guard, a rusty patio sign, or a diamond-plate that still has gravel in the pattern and expect a cosmetic print. We can print industrial parts. Cosmetic and industrial are different quotes. Rust prints as rust. We will not “fix it in the RIP.”
Outdoor metal, heat, and fasteners
Dark powder-coated aluminum on a west wall in Irvine in August is a griddle. The ink is already UV-cured, so we are not waiting for it to dry in the sun. We are worrying about the coating, the expansion of the sheet, and whether the fasteners pinch a hot panel. Oversized holes, proper washers, and a panel that can move a little are the usual metal-shop answers. Pinched sheets oil-can. That is not an ink failure.
Coastal jobs — Newport, Costa Mesa, Huntington, anything with salt in the afternoon wind — want a coating system that was meant for that, not a bare steel coupon we printed because it was in the trunk. We print in Irvine. We do not pretend a raw steel plate is marine hardware. Aluminum with a decent coat is the default. If your fabricator specified a particular powder for coastal use, keep that spec; we will print after it is cured.
Fasteners are part of finish. Painted heads, stainless caps, standoffs, or a frame: pick one on the quote. A beautiful print with four mismatched drywall screws is the install we see in cell photos after the fact. Hole locations belong on a layer in the file, offset from type. A phone number under a cap nut is a reprint. If the City or the landlord already drew the panel, send that drawing. We would rather print to their holes than invent a pattern that misses the embeds in the stucco.
Exterior metal that is visible from the public side of a building in Irvine is often a sign in the zoning sense, not “just a print.” The City’s sign pages exist for a reason. A powder-coated panel with a logo on a leased frontage is not exempt because we used a flatbed. Check the landlord’s sign program first, then the City if the program tells you to. Then print. The other order is how panels sit in a closet.
Glass: primer, view side, and what this ink is not
Glass is the substrate people treat like acrylic’s older cousin. It is heavier, colder, less scratch-happy on the face, and less forgiving when you guess the view side. It also does not get recut after it is tempered. Direct UV on glass is a graphic film on glass. It is not ceramic frit. It is not a kiln-fired enamel. It is not a factory-laminated interlayer. If you need those, you are in a glass shop’s world, and we will tell you that instead of approximating them with a pretty pass on the Arizona.
First surface versus reverse
First surface means you look at the ink. The face is the print. You need promoter, you need a cleaning plan that does not dissolve the film, and you accept that keys, rings, and aggressive glass cleaner are enemies. Reverse (second surface) means you look through the glass at the ink. We print mirrored on the back. The glass is the armor. This is the correct stack for a plaque people will touch, a door-facing hours panel viewed from the sidewalk through the storefront, and anything that will be wiped nightly.
Send files right-reading. We mirror for reverse. If you pre-mirror “to be helpful,” mark it in large type on the ticket or we will mirror it again and your wordmark will greet guests backward. That reprint is free only if we did it. A silent flip is yours.
Two-way glass — a panel that must read from the suite and from the sidewalk — is a blockout problem, not a “print both sides” checkbox. One flood of white is not a blockout in afternoon sun. If each face has different art, we are talking about opacity stacks or an opaque interlayer, and we need a sketch. If you only need the sidewalk to see the hours and the interior to see a ghost, that is a design choice. Say it. Do not make the installer discover it.
Tempered, annealed, thickness, low-iron
Annealed glass we can still talk about cutting, polishing, and drilling in a fabrication sequence. Tempered glass is already a finished size. Drill and cut before temper. If your glass is already tempered and a half-inch too wide for the channel, that is a glass order, not a trim-in-the-print-shop. Measure the daylight opening, the stops, and the channel before anyone tempers. Then we print the finished lite.
Thickness is weight and edge. Three-millimeter glass is a picture-frame conversation. Six-millimeter starts to feel like a plaque. Thicker is an object and a two-person carry. Edges can be seamed, polished, or left as they came from the glass shop. We print. If you need a polished edge, that is fabrication time, and it happens before we treat the face as sacred. Do not polish an already-printed first-surface edge with a belt sander in a parking lot.
Standard float has a green edge. Low-iron is the clearer body when the edge is part of the design or when whites have to stay white through the sheet on a reverse job. On a small plaque against a white wall, you may not care. On a 24×36 reverse-printed piece where the field is white, you will see the green as a gray cast if you are picky. Say if you are picky. Low-iron is a material line on the quote, not a RIP setting.
Coatings already on the glass — low-e, mirror, anti-glare, old window film — are not our promoter. Mirror is its own stack (you can print on the face, or you can get into the back and fight silver, and you should not do the second one as a walk-in). Low-e coatings can make adhesion and color unpredictable. If the lite is a leftover from a storefront package, tell us what it is. “Glass” is not a spec any more than “wood” is.
Windows, splashbacks, awards
A glass hours panel sitting inside a storefront, reverse-printed, white under the type, viewed from the parking lot, is a normal Irvine job. Confirm whether it hangs in the room, sits in a stand, or mounts to the interior of the glazing. Confirm you are allowed to mount to that glass. A lot of Irvine retail glass is not yours to drill. Adhesive mounting on glass is a size, weight, and surface-energy conversation. A large lite on tape on a cold morning is a floor lite at noon.
Kitchen splashbacks and lab backsplashes look like glass jobs and behave like chemical jobs. Degreasers, sanitizers, and whatever a lab tech actually uses will test first-surface ink. Reverse print behind the glass is the more sensible stack if the glass is a true splash lite and the ink is decorative. Grout, outlets, and cutouts are measured in the real wall, not in a phone photo. We are still not calling this a food-contact surface. It is a wall.
Awards and desk objects are small, heavy on edge quality, and easy to over-handle. First-surface logos on a glass block will scuff in a drawer. Reverse print or a protected face is the better object. If the award is a wine glass or a tumbler, skip to the food section and lower your expectations. Cylindrical drinkware is also a different print geometry than a flatbed. The Arizona wants a plane. A bottle is not a plane. We can talk about a flat glass panel that looks like a bottle display. We cannot pretend a Bordeaux bottle is a 4×8 sheet.

Indoor versus outdoor on these three materials
Indoor versus outdoor here is about wood, coated metal, and glass as objects — not about banner fabric, and not about which lobby board is trendiest. The room decides the substrate more than the mood board does.
Indoor, climate-controlled, hands-off: any of the three, chosen for look. A reverse-printed glass logo on standoffs. A walnut menu behind a host stand. A white powder-coated directory. Clean with the right rag. Do not park them in a west window and call them indoor just because there is a roof. Sun through glass is still sun. Heat through glass is still heat. A wood panel in a sun-loaded storefront will move. Ink on first-surface glass in that window will cook and get cleaned too often. Coated metal cares less.
Indoor, abused: kitchens, tasting-room counters, medical reception, kids’ heights in a retail shop. Prefer reverse glass, coated metal, or wood with a real clear coat and sealed edges. Prefer hardware that can be tightened twice without cracking a hole. Prefer type that still reads after a year of sanitizer haze. This is where people order walnut because it looked warm in a photograph and then wash it with a product meant for stainless. Bring the cleaner.
Outdoor, shaded: a patio under a deep overhang, a north wall, a covered walk in an office park. Coated metal is still the default. Wood is a maybe if the millwork is outdoor-rated and you will maintain it. Glass is a maybe if it is reverse-printed, well supported, and not a target for a door or a cart. Shade in Irvine in January is not shade in Irvine in September at 4 p.m. Walk the wall at the worst hour before you specify wood.
Outdoor, unshaded, parking-lot, west stucco, irrigation, salt air: coated metal. That is the sentence. Wood will weather. First-surface glass will fight adhesion, thermal shock, and cleaning. Reverse glass can live in some exterior frames, but you are then in glazing and sign-permit territory, not in “we UV-printed a sample.” If you want a graphic on a building face, we will talk metal (or another exterior-rated construction) under Irvine sign printing. If you want a wood object, keep it inside or treat it as a maintainable millwork piece, not as a permanent outdoor sign.
Mounting follows the room. Standoffs on interior glass and interior wood look intentional. The same standoffs on an exterior wood plaque collect water in the holes. Frames and channels on glass need room to move. Metal wants isolated fasteners on hot walls. Landlord rules in Irvine Company parks and in Spectrum-area retail will overrule all of the above if the program already specified a suite plaque. Ask for the PDF before we print a custom glass piece for a corridor that only accepts a 4×8-inch metal insert.
Food-adjacent work without fake FDA claims
This is the section restaurant and gift buyers skip, and then they ask us to say the word “food-safe” on an invoice. We will not. Standard UV graphic inks used for signs, plaques, and décor are formulated as graphic inks. They are not, in our shop, qualified and documented as food-contact substances for the face people cut on, drink from, or serve from. If a coating manufacturer has an effective Food Contact Notification for a specific varnish and a specific use, that is their paperwork, for their product, for that use. It is not a slogan we print on a cutting board because the file looks rustic.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration treats substances that contact food — packaging, cookware, food-preparation surfaces — as a regulated category. A food contact substance under FDA’s FCS program is not “the printer said it was fine.” It is a listed substance for an intended use. Graphic UV inks also use photoinitiators. FDA scientists have even studied photoinitiators used in inks on the exterior of food packaging because some of those chemistries can migrate. That research is the opposite of a green light to print a charcuterie pattern on the cheese side of a board and call it certified.
FDA’s consumer language is blunt: a food contact substance includes food packaging and its components, processing equipment, food preparation surfaces, or cookware. A UV-printed decorative face we produced as signage is not, by that fact, any of those things — and we will not invoice it as if it were.
What we will print, routinely, for food-adjacent businesses in Irvine and along the Spectrum:
- Wood or metal menu boards, host-stand panels, and wall art that never hold food.
- The underside, back, or rim of a serving board, with the cutting or serving face left unfinished by us, or finished only with whatever the wood vendor already specified — and still not claimed as FDA-cleared by Avanti.
- Glass or metal hours panels, office windows, and tasting-room décor.
- Display bottles and display trays that are props, not service ware, if the geometry can sit on the bed.
What we will not do is print the food-contact face of a cutting board, a cheese plate, a cup, or a plate and tell you the ink is food-safe. We will not hide that refusal in a footnote. If you need documented food-contact inks or coatings, you need a vendor who sells that system with FCN or equivalent documentation, and you need to follow their use conditions. That may not be a 4×8 sign flatbed in an Irvine print shop. We would rather lose the line item than invent a claim.
Sanitizer reality sits next to food-contact reality. Even a wall menu in a kitchen gets hit with cleaners. Reverse glass and coated metal survive that better than raw wood. If the object is a wood menu that servers grab with wet hands, spec a clear coat and a species that can take it, and plan on replacement as a cost of doing hospitality, not as a defect. Put “food-adjacent: wall décor / underside only / contact face” on the quote so nobody in the chain “fixes” it by printing the wrong side.
Files that survive a non-white substrate
Good wood, metal, and glass jobs die in prepress as often as they die on the wall. The bed is not confused. The file was built for a white browser window.
Send vector for marks and type: PDF, AI, or EPS, fonts outlined, logos as paths. Photographs can be raster. These objects are viewed at arm’s length more often than a hallway mural, so 200–300 ppi at final size is the band we want for a reception plaque or a menu people hold. 150 ppi can hold for a larger metal panel seen from a few feet. A 72 ppi web download stretched to 18×24 on brushed aluminum will look like a web download. Metal and glass are happy to show you that. Wood grain will not hide it either; it will just add noise.
Work in CMYK. RGB neons are a monitor event. If a brand red must hit a coated PMS number, say the number and understand the ground: that chip was printed on white paper. On walnut, on bronze powder, and on reverse glass with selective white, the same ink recipe is a different visual. Approvals that matter should be on the actual stack. We can get close. We cannot promise a spectro reading from a paper book will land on a dark metal under Spectrum downlights.
White channel: a spot color or a separate layer, 100% where white ink should print, 0% where the substrate should show. Do not flatten a JPEG and write “white behind the logo” in the email. We can build a simple plate for a one-color mark. We should not have to reverse-engineer a merged social-media export the morning of the run.
Bleed if ink goes to the edge: 1/8 inch is a typical ask on panels we trim. Glass and finished metal you do not want us to shear are a different story — we print to a margin or we print oversized on a sheet we cut, depending on the object. Say which. Safe type stays off hole locations, off standoff caps, and off the last few millimeters of a glass edge that might sit in a channel. A QR code on glass needs quiet field, size, and a place a phone can focus. A QR dropped on heavy walnut grain with no white plate is a decoration, not a scannable code.
Notes that belong on the ticket, not in a Slack screenshot: grain direction; view side of glass; first versus reverse; primer yes/no/test; indoor/outdoor; food-adjacent yes/no; hole layer named Holes or Cut, not drawn in 0.25-pt cyan that might print. If the panel is shaped, the cut path is a closed vector from a fabricator, not a drop shadow of a script logo.
Photographs of a previous plaque, a website screenshot, and “it’s on our Instagram, can you pull it” are not print files. Rebuild time is design time. Put rebuild / not rebuild on the quote with size, material, quantity, finish, and date.
Mistakes that reprint wood, metal, or glass
Reprints on these materials hurt because you paid for a substrate, a promoter, and handling, not just clicks. The pattern is boring and preventable.
- No primer on first-surface glass or stainless. It looks fine on day one. A fingernail or a cleaner lifts an edge in a month. Test or prime. Do not skip because a sample on maple printed without it.
- No white on dark powder coat or dark walnut. The logo is a rumor. Flood or selective white was the job. The first panel is scrap if we already finished the edges.
- Hardware-store primer or oil on the print face. Waxed cutting boards, oily teak, silicone, and gray rattle-can primer are not our process. Offcuts exist for a reason.
- Food-contact face treated as décor. We will not call it FDA-safe after the fact. Print the back, the wall, or a different object.
- Outdoor wood specified like indoor wood. The ink held. The board grayed, cupped, or grew a fuzzy edge from irrigation. Use coated metal outdoors, or build the wood as millwork.
- Tempered glass that still needs a trim. We cannot recut it. Measure twice, temper once, print last.
- Pre-mirrored glass files with no note. Backward hours on a storefront are a very public reprint.
- RGB or low-res art on a glossy face. Glass and metal magnify jaggies. Get the vector.
- Holes after the fact with a hardware-store bit. Chips in glass, burs on aluminum, blowout on the back of plywood. Drill in the shop to a template.
- Fingerprint fossils on stainless and glass. Handle clean. Peel masking at install, not in the parking lot in a Santa Ana wind.
- Landlord or City surprise on exterior metal. The panel is perfect. The sign program forbade it. Check the binder first.
- Sanitizer versus finish. Nightly kitchen chemistry on first-surface ink or raw wood. Reverse glass, coated metal, or a finish we chose for that rag.
- Warped wood on a vacuum bed. Low spots, head strikes, uneven color. Flatten, skip, or pick a different object.
- Missing size, material, quantity, finish, or date. That is how you get a range instead of a price, and a panel the day after the opening.
Dust and silicone deserve their own sentence. A shop that shares air with a cabinet sprayer, a construction corridor, or a detailer with tire dressing will contaminate a glass face faster than we can wipe it. If your fabricator is finishing powder in one bay and spraying mold release in the next, do not deliver those sheets in the same rack without a clean. We will catch some of it. We will not catch a film that looks clean and prints like a resist.
Irvine sun, landlords, and the City
Local conditions only matter when they change the object. Here they do. Orange County sun on west and south walls along Barranca, Jamboree, and the parking-lot side of Spectrum-area retail will heat dark metal, move wood, and bake first-surface ink. Coastal salt from Newport and Costa Mesa does not stop at the city line if that is where the panel lives. Irrigation clocks in office parks hit the bottom of plaques with mineral water every night. Those are substrate problems. Name the wall.
Irvine Company parks, University Research Park, and Spectrum-adjacent retail usually have a sign program. Suite plaques, directory strips, and monument slots are specified: size, typeface, material, mounting. Your custom reverse-printed glass may be allowed inside the suite and forbidden on the corridor. A powder-coated hours panel on the glass may be a criteria violation even if it is a good print. Ask the property manager for the PDF before we promote a full sheet. HOAs in villages such as Woodbridge, Turtle Rock, and Northwood are not looking for a commercial wood plaque on a fence. We will still print it if you insist. We will also still say you should read the CC&Rs.
The City of Irvine treats many exterior signs as a permit question, not a taste question. Start at the City’s sign permit rules for Irvine when the panel is visible from the public side. Wall signs typically need an elevation, dimensions, and the length of the leased frontage. We can print to a permitted drawing. We cannot issue the permit, and we will not tell you a storefront metal panel is “probably fine” because the ink is cured.
UCI and other campus facilities have their own brand and facilities rules. A metal equipment label in a lab is one queue. A glass donor panel in a public corridor is another. Bring the spec they already wrote. Anaheim and Costa Mesa jobs that still pick up on Barranca bring their own city rules; do not assume Irvine’s packet applies. The constant is the quote: object plus location plus permission.
Handling in this climate is mundane and expensive. Do not leave a reverse-printed glass lite unmasked on a passenger seat in July. Do not store sealed wood in a closed car on the 405. Do not lean coated metal face-down on a gravel lot. Corner chips on glass, oil-canning on thin aluminum, and a cup in a maple menu are often trip damage. We crate when you ship. What to send so the quote is real
Send one email a person can estimate from. If you skip fields, you get a range, not a price. Walk-ins Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at 15321 Barranca Pkwy, Irvine, CA 92618 are welcome if you bring the actual piece or a tape-measured size. You can also start on the Irvine Printing site with the same five fields. Quotes confirm size, material, quantity, finish, and date. Add primer and food-adjacent notes on this product line so we do not guess.
- Size. Width × height × thickness, in inches, view-side. For glass in a channel, daylight opening and clearance. For wood, whether the size is the finished object or a blank we will cut.
- Material. Wood species and existing finish; coated aluminum, powder color, stainless, or bare; glass annealed or tempered, low-iron or standard. Indoor or sun-exposed, and the facing if outdoor.
- Quantity. One object is a different setup than twenty matching plaques with variable names. Variable copy is a template plus a list, not twenty separate mystery PDFs.
- Finish. Primer / sealer / test; white flood, selective, or none; first surface or reverse on glass; holes (count, diameter, offset); hardware; clear coat yes/no; edge work.
- Date. The day it must be on the wall or in the restaurant, not “ASAP.” Primed glass and sealed wood are not a while-you-wait counter job. Tempered glass lead time is often the glass, not the ink.
State food-adjacent in plain language: wall décor, underside of a board, or a contact face you should not be asking us to print. State pickup versus crate-and-ship versus install. State whether a landlord, brand manager, or health inspector (for location, not for our ink) must approve a proof. Attach the file or say you need a rebuild. If a metal fabricator or a glass shop is already in the chain, copy their drawing. We would rather print to their holes than invent a pattern.
If the same opening also needs a wall mural, a rigid board, or a window graphic that is not wood, metal, or glass, list it as a separate line. Different process, different file, different finish. Mixing them into one “just UV everything” instruction is how a glass primer ends up in a sentence about paper.

Questions buyers ask before we load the bed
Do I always need primer on wood, metal, and glass?
No. You often need it on first-surface glass and on stainless or bare metal. You often need a sealer on open-grain wood. You often skip extra primer on a clean, fully cured powder coat and on tight-grain maple that is already sanded and dry. Always is the word that causes reprints. Put primer: shop, vendor, none, or test on the quote, and bring an offcut when the finish is a mystery. A rattle-can from the hardware store is not the same as a UV-inkjet promoter.
When do I need white ink?
When the substrate is not a white ground and you want solid color or a photograph that looks like itself. Dark powder coat, dark walnut, bronze, stainless, and clear glass all need a white decision. Skip white when you want a stain on maple or a ghost on glass. Selective white when you want the grain, the brush, or the clear field to remain. Flood white when you want opacity and you are willing to hide the substrate in the graphic area. Build a real white channel. “Make it pop” is not a channel.
Can you print a cutting board, a cheese plate, or drinkware as food-safe?
We can print décor. We will not certify a food-contact face. Standard UV graphic inks in this shop are not invoiced as FDA food-contact substances. Print the underside, the rim, or a wall piece. If you need a documented food-contact coating, that is a coatings manufacturer with FCN paperwork, not a sentence we add to a plaque quote. FDA’s food-contact program exists because this distinction matters. We will not blur it to win a board.
Will UV printing on wood last outdoors in Orange County?
The ink is the smaller part of that question. Unshaded OC sun, irrigation, and seasonal movement will age the wood whether the print is perfect or not. Sealed, outdoor-rated millwork in shade can be an honest project if you will maintain it. A raw walnut plaque on a west fence is a weather experiment. For unshaded exterior signs, coated metal is the default we will steer you toward. If you want outdoor wood anyway, say outdoor, say the facing, and we will spec sealer, species, and expectations instead of pretending an indoor menu is a monument.
Can you print on stainless, brushed aluminum, and powder-coated panels?
Yes, with the coating and the cleanliness as the spec. Powder-coated and pre-painted aluminum are the predictable versions. Brushed aluminum needs a white-ink decision so you do not accidentally hide the brush — or accidentally fail to. Stainless usually wants promoter and a fingerprint-free face. Anodized is a test. Oily, rusty, or peeling parts are a fabrication problem first. Send the actual finish name if you have it, not only the word metal.
Should glass be first-surface or reverse?
Reverse when people will touch it, clean it, or view it through the sheet from a sidewalk. First-surface when the sheet is opaque, when both sides carry different constraints, or when a promoter-plus-face print is the look you actually want. Storefront hours almost always want reverse plus white, with the view side named. Send right-reading files. Tell us if you already mirrored them. Tempered lites are already the finished size; do not plan a trim after print.
What file and resolution do you need?
Vector logos and type, CMYK, white as a spot or layer, right-reading, bleed if we trim to ink, holes on their own layer. Photos at about 200–300 ppi at size for arm’s-length plaques and menus; 150 ppi can hold for a larger metal panel. No 72 ppi web JPEGs, no Instagram screenshots as the master, no flattened RGB “and also white somehow.” Grain direction, view side, and indoor/outdoor belong in the same email. If the only art is a brand-portal PNG, say so early so we can tell you whether it is usable.
How large can you print, and how fast is this?
The bed takes up to 4×8 feet and up to 2 inches thick. That is a ceiling, not a recommendation for a 3 mm glass sheet or a 1/4-inch warped plank. Handling, weight, holes, and the vehicle you drive to Barranca usually cap the job first. Straightforward coated-metal panels with a clean file are a different clock from primed glass with polished edges and hardware, and a different clock again from a slab that needs sealing and a test patch. Put the needed-by date on the quote. “ASAP” is not a date. Rush exists when the substrate is in house, the face is compatible, and the finish is simple. We will say no if the honest answer is no.
Bring the object, not just the PDF
Direct UV printing on wood, metal, and glass in Irvine is a specific product: ink cured on a face you chose on purpose. The choices that matter are the ones in this article — which of the three materials, whether we prime or seal, how white ink sits, whether the room is indoor or Orange County sun, and whether anyone thinks food will touch the print. Everything else is decoration.
